Tonight's family dinner, and I know Jake will be here. Haven't heard from Sara yet. I'm sure Deb has told me what we're having for dinner, but I've spaced it already. There's artichokes on the counter. Sara, if you're reading this, you don't have to eat it.

I love artichoke. Never thought I would the first time I saw one. And if I remember correctly, the first time I ever saw one was the morning after a party at college at the rickety home of a friend who was a professional student. I think she was 29 and had been in college for all 11 or 12 years since high school. She was like Zonker from Doonesbury. Anyway, I think I'd ended up crashing somewhere in the house, and in the morning my hostess friend, who, in hindsight, I think must've smoked some pot, was going on and on about how she loved artichoke for breakfast and did I want one. Remember what it feels like to drink beer and smoke all night long and then get about three hours of sleep and wake up in the glaring light of day? Think of that feeling. Now think about whether an artichoke would look appetizing. urb. I didn't try an artichoke for a long time.
