Will the real slayer please come forward 2001-09-17 10:57 a.m. I've picked up three different novels since Tuesday, and couldn't get into any of them. I've finally settled on "The Watcher's Guide", the companion book to the first few seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We could really use a good slayer right now. I would encourage the council to waive the "slayers don't kill humans" rule temporarily and let Buffy, Faith, and whoever the newly called slayer is (cause Buffy died at the end of last season, but you know she will rise again) have at it.

Wouldn't that be cool?

With a little backup from Suzanne Brockmann's SEAL teams, we'd have things back to normal in no time.

I spoke to one of our Delta flight attendant neighbor's yesterday. He said he's getting time-and-a-half on top of time-and-a-half because attendants don't want to fly and aren't showing up for work. There are also a lot of flights still getting cancelled. He's afraid of layoffs. With good reason, I'm sure. I told him if he lost his job we could feed him on a regular basis. Deb made a LOT of soup last night, plus home made cheese bread. It was great.

It had soybeans and purple cabbage and spicy chicken sausage and green chilis in it. Mmmmmm-mmm. Maybe she'll write it up. We put a pretty good dent in it. And I couldn't stop eating the bread.

My other pic for the day is a cool little caterpillar that was on our Ginko tree. Deb and Jake pointed it out to me. The green on its back is the exact shade of the Ginko leaves. Maybe my lepidopterist friend and all-'round-guy-who-knows-everything, Steve, can give me an ID if he happens to read this. Though I suppose not all caterpillars become butterflies or moths. Do they?

And while we're talking about books. I finished Suzanne Brockmann's "Over the Edge" in one day while we were on vacation. It was wonderful. It had me alternately on the edge of my deck chair and laughing out loud. The plot, coincidentally, revolves around the hijacking of a commercial jet from Athens, Greece, to a fictional Middle Eastern country and the SEAL team and FBI Hostage Negotiation Team rescue efforts. Possibly the best part of the book, though, was the secondary subplot about continuing developments in the relationship between Sam Starrett, Navy SEAL, and Alyssa Locke, FBI special agent and one of the best snipers in the world. I can't reveal plot points, but Suzanne really screwed Sam sideways. No mercy for that boy.

Oh, and I finally got the latest Strangers In Paradise this weekend. Very, very interesting. If any SIP readers want to e-mail me privately about Terry Moore's big surprise, feel free. That means you, too, Z.

Gotta get back to work for now.
